How to Check PTA Status of Any Phone in Pakistan (2026 Guide)

By Yaqeen Editorial Team26 July 2026 (updated)5 min read

What is PTA Status?

PTA (Pakistan Telecommunication Authority) regulates all mobile phones used in Pakistan. Every phone needs to be registered with PTA through the DIRBS (Device Identification, Registration & Blocking System) to work on Pakistani networks.

Three Types of PTA Status

1. PTA Approved

The phone is fully registered and will work on all Pakistani networks without any issues. Full tax has been paid. This is the safest option for buyers.

2. JV (Joint Venture)

JV phones are partially registered. They work on one SIM slot only. The reduced tax makes them cheaper, but you lose dual-SIM functionality. JV phones are legal and work fine for single-SIM users.

3. Non-PTA

These phones are not registered with PTA. They may work for a limited time (typically 60 days) before being blocked. After blocking, they won't connect to any Pakistani network. Non-PTA phones are significantly cheaper but come with risks.

How to Check IMEI / PTA Status

  1. Find your IMEI: Dial *#06# on the phone, or check Settings → About Phone → IMEI
  2. Check online: Visit the official DIRBS website at dirbs.pta.gov.pk
  3. SMS method: Send your IMEI number to 8484

Why PTA Status Matters When Buying

Buying a phone without checking PTA status is one of the biggest mistakes buyers make. A Non-PTA phone might be 30-40% cheaper, but it could stop working within weeks. Always verify before paying.

How Yaqeen Helps

On Yaqeen, every phone listing shows its declared PTA status: Approved, JV, or Non-PTA. Sellers must show the IMEI on screen (dial *#06#) in their photos and pre-dispatch video, and we block the same IMEI from being listed by two different sellers. PTA has no public verification API, so you should still confirm the IMEI yourself on 8484, and you can do that during your 72-hour inspection window. Combined with CNIC-verified sellers and escrow protection, you stay protected even if a phone turns out blocked.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check the PTA status of a phone in Pakistan?

Dial *#06# to find the phone's IMEI, then send that IMEI number to 8484 by SMS, or check it on the official DIRBS site at dirbs.pta.gov.pk. This tells you whether the phone is PTA-approved, JV, or Non-PTA.

What is the difference between PTA-approved, JV, and Non-PTA phones?

PTA-approved phones are fully registered and work on all Pakistani networks permanently with full tax paid. JV (Joint Venture) phones are partially registered and work on one SIM slot only. Non-PTA phones are unregistered and are typically blocked after about 60 days.

What happens if I buy a Non-PTA phone?

A Non-PTA phone usually works for around 60 days, then gets blocked by DIRBS and stops connecting to any Pakistani network. It is cheaper upfront but risky, so always verify PTA status before paying.

Is a JV phone worth buying?

A JV phone is legal and cheaper because of reduced tax, but it only works on a single SIM slot. It is a good choice if you use one SIM and want to save money, but not if you need dual-SIM functionality.
