How do you check a phone's PTA registration?
Display the IMEI on the actual phone and check each number independently through an official channel. Do this before paying, even when a listing says PTA approved. A seller's screenshot, a valid-looking number or a working SIM at one moment is not a substitute for checking the exact device.
- Find the number: dial
*#06#or open the device's About screen. Dual-SIM devices can have more than one IMEI; check each one. - Use SMS: send each 15-digit IMEI separately to 8484 and read the reply for that number. Zong documents this verification method.
- Use official alternatives: the PTA DVS app verifies IMEI status. Follow the FBR DIRBS page for official registration information and links.
- Resolve differences: compare the device identity with the listing and seller's evidence. If the numbers or results differ, ask for an explanation before proceeding.
PTA approved, Non-PTA and JV: which checks are different?

PTA registration concerns the device's eligibility for local mobile networks. FBR explains that DIRBS identifies non-compliant devices and eventually blocks them. Do not assume an unregistered used phone has an unused grace period or quote a fixed tax amount without checking the official process for that device.
JV is commonly used in Pakistan for a carrier-locked phone. It is not partial PTA approval or a lower-tax single-SIM category. On an iPhone, inspect Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. What an IMEI result does not prove
A registration result does not assess battery health, repairs, the seller's ownership or a carrier lock. Inspect those separately. A box can also belong to a different phone, so a matching box alone is not proof of the device's history. Keep the IMEI private rather than posting the full number in a public review or discussion.
What if the check fails or gives an unclear result?
Keep the result as unknown until it is resolved. Retry an official channel and use PTA's support process when necessary. An unavailable website is not evidence that a phone is approved or blocked. Do not pay a stranger for a promised “instant unlock” based only on a chat message.
