What is PTA Status?
PTA (Pakistan Telecommunication Authority) regulates all mobile phones used in Pakistan. Every phone needs to be registered with PTA through the DIRBS (Device Identification, Registration & Blocking System) to work on Pakistani networks.
Three Types of PTA Status
1. PTA Approved
The phone is fully registered and will work on all Pakistani networks without any issues. Full tax has been paid. This is the safest option for buyers.
2. JV (Joint Venture)
JV phones are partially registered. They work on one SIM slot only. The reduced tax makes them cheaper, but you lose dual-SIM functionality. JV phones are legal and work fine for single-SIM users.
3. Non-PTA
These phones are not registered with PTA. They may work for a limited time (typically 60 days) before being blocked. After blocking, they won't connect to any Pakistani network. Non-PTA phones are significantly cheaper but come with risks.
How to Check IMEI / PTA Status
- Find your IMEI: Dial
*#06#on the phone, or check Settings → About Phone → IMEI - Check online: Visit the official DIRBS website at dirbs.pta.gov.pk
- SMS method: Send your IMEI number to 8484
Why PTA Status Matters When Buying
Buying a phone without checking PTA status is one of the biggest mistakes buyers make. A Non-PTA phone might be 30-40% cheaper, but it could stop working within weeks. Always verify before paying.
