What phone does WhatsApp currently support?
Checked on 21 October 2026: WhatsApp's official help page lists Android 6.0 or newer and iOS 15.1 or newer. It also says that from 30 November 2026, iPhones need iOS 15.5 or newer. Recheck the official page before purchasing because these requirements change.
A redesigned chat bar or browser feature is different from ending support for an operating system. Do not replace a working phone solely because its interface looks different from a screenshot online.
Check the actual installed software
- Ask the seller to show the software version in Settings on the exact phone, rather than quoting a model name.
- Compare that version with WhatsApp's current official minimum. If an update is needed, confirm that the model can receive it through its normal software-update screen.
- Allow for the phone's condition, storage and battery. Meeting an app's minimum version does not guarantee a fast phone or ongoing operating-system security support.
Consider setup, not just opening the app
WhatsApp says a phone must be able to receive SMS or calls during verification and that it does not support setting up new accounts on Wi-Fi-only devices. This matters when comparing carrier-locked and Non-PTA devices. A demonstration of someone else's existing chat screen does not establish that you can register and use your own account.
Never give a seller your registration code. Check your intended setup and device restrictions before committing to an order. Our JV and factory-unlocked guide explains carrier restrictions, while the IMEI guide covers the separate registration check.
Do you need a different phone?
If your current phone supports the required software and meets your needs, a new interface is not by itself a reason to spend money. If you do need a replacement, compare current phone listings, ask for a software-version photo and include battery and repair condition in your decision. Avoid choosing only by the lowest asking price.
